My 98 V8 5L does 14-15 miles per gallon on the streets and 16-17 miles per gallon on highway.

This is about what I get also, except in the winter months when I use the remote start alot. Then I get about 10-12 with alot of idle time.

12 to 13 mixed isn't terrible, but but its not as good as it should be. Probably want to go over the whole truck and check everything out anyways with a new (to you) vehicle. New fluids, filters, wires, plugs, etc... Make sure the MAF is clean (use MAF cleaner stuff and don't touch the wire w/ your bare hands). Make sure there are no vacuum leaks as well. If its not throwing any codes then probably just needs some PM and TLC.
Congrats on your new X!

If you do have a cracked manifold, check to see that the plug wires aren't scorched around the breach. If they are, it could arc, or misfire and throw an O2 code, and definitely affect gas mileage.

Once running well, you wouldn't have noticed much mileage difference at all in the V6 compared to the V8 anyway.

I get 21.5 mpg, mostly highway.
