i was wondering wich year ex had the full time AWD t-case that is full mechanical operation.....
and has anyone ever made a first gen X AWD? i did a search and i couldnt find anything...if someone has did they use the whole drivetrain out of the new X like the SOHC engine and newer tranny or would you be able to mount it on an M5OD or A4LD tranny?

From the second gen (1995+) of Explorers onward, the AWD with a V8 was available. You'd have to search but I imagine someone may have swapped the engine and drivetrain over to an earlier Explorer, though probably with a modified front end drivetrain due to the differences.

First year for a V8 was 1996. Any AWD 5.0 explorer has the completely manual case.

The output shafts for the V8 tranny and V6 tranny's are different, you would have to change that to use the AWD case on a V6.

Heh? I thought the AWDs were not completely mechanical. The selectable cases (1354, 4405...) were the completely mechanical.

I'll go look under the 5.0 tomorrow when this coastal flood warning has passed but I am fairly sure it is not computer controlled. I think it is always just split a certain percentage, something like 30/70 maybe.

I agree, its a viscous link. I guess my definition of "mechanical" was just different. I was thinking along the lines of actual gears meshing with each other or a chain -- like on the 1354 and 4405.

Full time AWD, traditionally, is a split (either 70/30 or 60/40) all the time, regardless.

The full-time AWD cases are the Borg-Warner 44-06 on the Explorer. The 44-06 from an F-150 is selectable 4wd, not AWD.

The AWD 44-06 on the Explorer was behind the 5.0L Explorer/Mountaineer. IIRC, the 4.6 2nd-gens also had the AWD case. For '02-up, the 44-06 is a mechanical/selectable/electronic case.

Now, as for whether or not it would work in a 1st gen, it may bolt up to an A4LD, but it would be one heck of an effort to do so... depending on the year of the donor case, there are a bunch of different front output shaft arrangements, as well as the issues with the speedo sensor (which may be in the trans on a 1st gen)...

Sorry I can't be more help....
