Original owner 99 XLT 85,000 miles. I've done 2 pan drops ( by a mechanic) during the last 10 years, but never a flush. So I tried it today. I purchased 10 quarts of Advanced Auto Parts MerconV, and followed the procedure as described on this forum of removing the return line under the radiator and draining a quart at a time. Now that I've been through the procedure I'd like to share some thoughts and tips:
First off, you have to cap off the other end of the return line because fluid still spurts out. I accomplished this with attaching a hose and using visegrips to clamp it shut.
Second, put a drain pan under the vent line for the tranny. When I started adding the new ATF, some leaked out of the tube all over the street. I guess you have to allow some room for the fluid to flow before adding it. I found out the hard way.
Other than that it was straightfoward. This was just a flush, I did not drop the pan or change the filter. I figured it has been changed twice already and I did not think it was necessary to go through the trouble of the mess with dropping the pan.
