- 1997 Ford Explorer XLT
I just purchased a broken down 1997 Explorer XLT from a guy who said the oil pump failed. It has right at 100K on it.
Sure enough it has zero oil pressure.
I pulled the 4.0 OHV and pulled the oil pan and the bottom of the pan had a solid 3 inches of sludge...So much the oil pump screen was completely submerged in sludge and preventing any oil flow. When I tried to drain the oil nothing came out of the drain plug even though the dip stick showed the crankcase was full. Crazy!!!
The end results are the crankshaft is shot, Rod bearings and rod bearing journals are shot on the crank, everything else looks to be in good shape.
Rebuilding the engine now.....
