As I scroll through allot of reading, I see allot of explorers list K&N as a mod. I have searched for one to put on my 1998 / 5.0, I cannot find an intake anywhere. Does K&N make one for the 1998, 5.0 or do they just make replacement filters?
I believe ther is a MAC Intake available for your vehicle which would be very similar. If you wanted to swap out the filter for a K&N it would be easy to measure the filter size and call the parts house.
I went to ExplorerExpress.com and all they had was MAC for a 4.0 6banger. I have yet to find anything to help the performance for a 5.0 and I do not want just a replacement filter, I want the whole enchilada. ;-)
Hey they actually offer several intakes for different engines
your part number would be MP 3659 150 dollars sure beats the 240 I paid for the K&N, and its prettier
If you have the conical airbox the K&N FIPK1 kit part number is 57-2513-1. You can still use the kit even if you have a flat panel box. All you have to do is swap the airbox mounting bracket with one for the conical airboxes. It only cost $12 from ford. Heres a pic of mine.
The bracket is bolted to the body under the airbox and holds the two rubber washers for the aibox feet and also holds a relay box at the end. The brackets differ for the 95-97 conical and 98+ flat panel airboxes. The conical airbox brackets have a bend in them and sit higher on the end. Thats why the FIPK1 kits won't fit the SOHC engines. But, if you use a bracket from a conical style airbox you can use the FIPK1 on the SOHC engines.
on ee's website, the second picture caption says, "MP3640 Explorer V6 OHV 96-01"
then below that part number isnt listed. has anyone tried this on a 1995 4.0? from my understanding there isnt any difference between 95/96, of course, i could be wrong... what do you guys think?
maybe john v would be better qualified to answer this question...

"It is possible to install the Mac Intake on a 95 Explorer. The mass air sensor is built into the air box on 95 only. You will need the Mac Intake $149.5, Pro-M Mass Air Sensor $229.95 & special plug adapter so you can plug in the mass air sensor $20.00. It does take a little bit of fabricating. It is a matter of rerouting breather hoses etc. It has been done successfully by my customers"
