I recently got a Kenwood (KDC-115S) 180 watt cd player from a friend. Damn thing doesnt play CDs...

It just makes the 'reading' clicking noise and spins the disc quickly, before spitting it back out. Maybe the lens is just dirty? I have no idea. I also have a 140 watt Kenwood deck but doesnt sound as good, so I want to use this one. Any ideas?

Also, I have an Eddie Bauer so I'm assuming the "amp" wire actually goes to an amp. How powerful is this amp, and how powerful are the speakers? Also what are the size of the speakers?

I would like to take some time and thank you for your deeply insightful, cutting edge informing reply.

...? yeah and? haha.

I hope your friend gave it to you and there was no financial transaction.

Other wise you lost out :(

contact kenwood they are usually very helpful.

I put in a CD cleaning disc today with the little brush on it. It got about halfway through the instuctions and then it started clicking and not playing. So it can't be totally screwed.

? No ones ever come across this?

Not sure about the CD player, either keep trying the cleaning thing or see if you can have Kenwood fix it.

As far as the amp and speakers, the amp is an 80W total amp. The stock speakers are acceptable for stock speakers, but compared to aftermarket ones they have all the audio power of a TV on mute. Sound way worse than aftermaket ones too. The speakers are 6x8, but 5x7s will fit as well.

It's possible the "track" the laser assembly rides on may have dirt built up on it, thus the partial read of the cleaning disc, and may need to be cleaned or, the lens itself may be very dirty, so dirty in fact that a cleaning disc may not be enough, or both.

If you or someone you know has a steady hand, cleaning the lens is very simple really. All you have to do is remove the cover of the unit and use a fresh Q-Tip with either alcohol or better yet Glass plus/windex, dampen the Q-Tip with whatever you use and GENTLY wipe over the lens...GENTLY! Alcohol/glass plus/windex are perfect because they evaporate quickly and do a good job of cleaning ( with no streaks mind you...heh heh )

Don't push to hard just let the weight of the Q-Tip do the job, if there is no electrical or mechanical problems with the unit, CD's should read fine afterwards. The "track the assembly rides on is fairly easy to clean as well, sometimes all it may need is a tiny dab of grease and a power cycle of the unit to free up what ever dust/dirt may have built up.

I've done this so many times I've lost count, made alot of money doing it too, especially with pet owners and Smokers, you would be suprised at how much nicotene builds up on things you never thought it could, or where animal hair eventually decides to settle.

just be careful not to knoc the lens out of alignment, unless that is the problem already. The Q-tip thing is a great idea, but make sure that you do not push hard. Let us know how it works.
