I have a 2001 explorer 4 door xlt. When I got the truck the dealer gave me 2 chip keys to start the truck. I always got in by either using the remote or the keypad on the door. I realized that if my battery went dead for some reason that my chip keys don't turn in the door locks or by the back window.
My question is if I went to a dealership and gave him my registration with the vin number would they be able to cut me an entry key or will I have to remove one of the locks and take it to a locksmith to have a key made? Thanks

Your locks may have seized up because they never get used. You should be able to get a new key cut from the dealership though as a spare. I've had them cut a new key for an ex-girlfriend's car but it is an entry key only, DO NOT use it in the ignition. Because you will most likely drive the vehicle there you shouldn't have any problems, but I had to bring paperwork with the VIN and my name on it.

Or Walmart. They got chip keys now along with a computerized cutting machine that cuts the right way. I gave them a worn key and they gave me one that was cut like a new one.

I used PB Blaster to loosen up my ceased up locks.

I don't need the chip key to start the car I need just an entry key. I don't think the locks are seized up I just don't have a key for them. I was just trying to find out if anyone ever got an entry key made at a dealership with just the vin # from the car or if I'll have to pull one of the locks and take it to a locksmith.

The key that starts your truck opens your doors, however a key that opens your doors might not start your truck. I agree that your locks are seized, I had that same issue on my 97, locksmith had to remove, clean, and replace some parts to get all 3 locks to work

Thanks, I went to Ford today and they cut me 2 entry keys just for the doors. They told me it was the same key too but it may be oxidation in the locks from not being used.
I sprayed some lock ease into the locks and 2 of them are working again. I am going to keep spraying into the third lock to see what happens. At least I can get into my truck if the battery should die.
Thanks for the help.
