I have the KKM filter, which I installed last spring. In July and August I would get detonation even running super -- any suggestions -- has anyone had this problem -- would a 180 degree thermostat do the trick? I have a 93 Sport 4.0L OHV.

What is detonation that you describe??? i am thinking of purchasing the KKM, what are your experiences with the KKM? Do i HAVE to run premium fuel??? thanks.

I have a KKM filter on my 94 and haven't had a single problem with it. It's a great thing. When I had stock tires and exahust I got exceptionally better MPG. You can't beat it. Even with a K&N filter I don't think you'll get the same performance out of it you will out of the KKM... The first thing you'll notice when you install it is the difference in sound. I was thouroughly impressed...

Bill- As far as the detonation goes.... I burn 89 octane. If you burn 94 right now I'd switch as soon as possible. I've been told that you'll mess up you're engine if you burn it for very long. I got that noticeable ping and when I burned 94 it seemed to get worse so I switched back to 89. I have found that I get more miles out of it too. Have you replaced your plugs and wires lately?? I'd replace them with Boshe premium plugs and premium plug wire and see if that doesn't help. Hope this helps!

Well, overall I have to say the KKM unit is great -- in the last summer ny was very hot and I would get pinging unles I used 92 octane. Now in the winter 89 is fine.
With the KKM you get some more power, better sound and mileage slight improvement. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed the pinging. Yes, I had plugs and wires in the spring.

YES I HAVE PINGING ALSO AND HAVE TWO THREADS OUT THERE TRYING TO RESOLVE IT. I HAVE RUN A LOT OF CLEANER, CHECKED/CLEANED PLUGS, R&R DRIVER SIDE O2, CLEANED MAS, WITH NO LUCK. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR A YEAR NOW AND HAVE BEEN RUNNING 92 TO KEEP IT DOWN. PLEASE FORWARD ANY INFO. THAT YOU MAY RECIEVE.
P.S. I KNOW OF A AEROSTAR (4.OL) WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

I live in the outback of Australia where the temp is 30dec t0 49de celcus all year round ,i have been using kkm for a year now with no problem and clean it four times .
Our lowest fuel octane here is 91

I've been running the KKM for a couple years now with no problems. I do run 91 octane, but that is due to my chip. With the chip out I run 88 with no pinging, either. I've never tried the lower octane with the chip in, though.

Bill; this is going to sound crazy, but! After replacing and cleaning everything (plugs and pcv since my last response), I drilled four 2" holes around my filter box and now the pinging is gone! A while ago I removed my cold-air duct and turned the elbo over to create a "snokel" at the air box. This "snorkel" must have been sucking all the HOT air from the top of the engine compart causing the PINGING! The holes I drilled are on the fender-well side and the rear of the box (stay away from the exhaust side where its HOT). I can't think of any way for you to get cool air to the filter area other than "LOOVERING" or "SCOOPING" your hood.
