2000 XLS
Hi, I have done the searches on this product and gone to the websight. It looks like a really good product. But will this KKM cause faster wear on my Explorer? I have a 2000 xls with only 6k miles. I am going to need to keep this xplorer for a very long time and dont want anything that will decrease its life time. My dad bought this Explorer for me and I will have to buy my next car as I am headed off to college so I really want to keep this explorer for a VERY long time. Anyone know?

Thanks, Grant-P

no, it will not cause accelerated wear on your truck. actually, its much less restrictive for your truck - lets your engine breathe much easier. i have one and am very happy with it.

I think what Fantasymon is meaning, is, will a K&N, or KKM or other hi-pass air filter allow more dirt into the engine than a traditional paper filter?

The manufacturers of the K&N and S&B/KKM say no. In fact they claim their oil and gauze design protects better than paper. AMSOIL claims their filter protects even better than the oil n' gauze designs.

Who knows???

I think that if it so happened that the K&N or KKM really did pass more dirt particles than a traditional air filter (and I don't know if this is actually true), I think that the small size of the particles, (a few tenths of microns across or whatever) are so small that they are insignificant once they hit the motor oil. A traditional paper filter will pass the same size particles....and below a certain size of dirt particle, the particle will be too small to harm the engine. That is, if you change your oil at a decent interval, you won't cause extra wear on your engine parts just because you use a high-flow air filter. Grant you this is all my take on the whole argument. Regular oil & oil filter changes are the TRUE key to long engine life.

Making you engine not have to work as hard will only make the life of the engine even longer.

I have the KKM install and I love it, wouldn't give it away for the world. :)

I love my KKM its worth every penny, its one mod you'll notice the power! I would also like to add that one of my brackets that was holding the KKM in place loosed and came off, and the I just caught this yesterday, one of the pulleys was eating a hole through my intake tube, AFTER MY FILTER! I thought it was through... but luckily that plastic is thick...... Do not think twice about getting the KKM it is worth it and if you bolt it down god unlike me you'll have miles and miles of good fun from your KKM. OH BTW my 100th POST YAHOO!!!!

I just put mine on my 2001 Sport and love it. There is no reason that this product will cause any more "wear" on you engine. If you take a look at your stock paper filter and compare it with a S&B (which comes with the KKM kit) or a K&N filter, you will see that the standard paper filter is inferior in many ways (most of all the lack of oil used to capture particulates in the air). Also, The S&B is going to be a lifetime filter (you'll just need to clean it every 15 - 20K miles). Combine this with the added performance, and this decision should be a no brainer.

As far as your warranty, however, the KKM kit instructions includes a disclaimer stating that if you are worried about your warranty, you should not change the stock configuration of your vehicle. This is kind of a gray area, and I think something that depends alot upon your dealer. Some dealers will actually install these type of kits for you and say its no problem. Others may say the device will void your warranty. Bottom line is - to avoid problems, I'd probably replace the KKM with your stock filter box and reset the ECM prior to taking your X in for any major service during the course of your warranty.

My advice is to go for it. You'll love the results.

KKM Oh Ya Baby!

The way the guy at KK explained it to me was that the filter collects the same amount or more dirt and trash as a paper filter but due to the design of the filter as it collects the stuff it still allows maximum airflow and the paper filter would eventually clog up and become really inefficient. I clean my KKM about twice a year. I have had mine for close to 3 years and I believe that it has paid for itself in filter savings and now that I have 130,000 miles on my 95 xlt and am still running awesome. Considering the hell ive put my baby through I give part of the credit to KKM for it stil running smooth. Also it makes your truck sound more hossy and with fat exhaust it even sounds better. The gas mileage difference is noticible and with good exhaust it is even better. I average 340 miles when driving conservative and it definitely gives you a bit of power increase but nothing really substantial.

Dude get it and you will be happy.

I think as long as you dont drive right behind someone on dirt roads and dont get water in the intake any filter will be plenty of protection.

How much did you guys notice in MPG with you KKM?

I would say 20 - 30 miles a tank, but when i first got it none because i was flooring it all of the time.

i drive my x in hunting woods which is dry dust. i clean right after hunting season and it is pretty dirty. my old paper filters would have clogged up big time. i have got water into it though and that was a bad day. i jumped into a puddle at nags head north carolina at oregan inlet and it was about 4 feet deep as oppossed to the few inches i was anticipating. the water just filled the engine compartment. the thing is i believe that with a stock air box and filter it would have done the same thing. i was able to flush the engine and change my plugs and clean the hell out of everything and it was alright.

you should definitely get the filter. my $.02.

I just installed my KKM and it is great. I drove to my favorate straight streatch and from a dead stop I hit 80 at four telephone poles pre KKM. Then I went back after install and hit 92 at the same telephone pole! God Damn it sounds good too!
