Which air filter combo gives more bang for the buck?

1. K&N Drop-in w/ holes in the airbox?
2. KKM open air filter kit.

K&N is like 50 bucks and KKM is 90 for kit. Which one guys?

kubben,
I have a KKM on my 98 and have had no problems thus far
(6 months). I haven't calculated the mileage since install but, it seems to have stayed about the same (18 MPG). My problem is having the the Borla Catback on, just cannot keep my foot out of it, love that rumble. Wife has the same problem since the Borla install, though she won't admit it. Not much help but, I thought I would put my 2 cents in, I like it so far.

AMSOIL vs KKM & k&N

You might want to search out AMSOIL. They have a rep on this forum site and what I have heard (and read) is that the sub 20 micron protection from AMSOIL is superior to either of the other two brands. I have the KKM (S&B conical filter ) unit, and it breathes much more air than the drop-in K&N, but if there's dirt getting in there, like I suspect, it might be better to go with the AMSOIL or wrap the KKM conical unit with a sheer layer of 1/4" foam (the kind they sell at the hdwe store for air conditioners) that has been oiled with the AMSOIL, S&B or K&N oil.

An option for the KKM filters is a filter from JET Performance Products. They have a foam filter for the aftermarket air intakes that is similar in construction to the AMSOIL filters. If you want maximum dirt removal, wash the JET filter and reoil with AMSOIL's Foam Filter Oil. It's a lot more tackier than other products.
