I'm 6'3" and Coach Soccer and Softball. I love the room for me and my kids in my Explorer!

2003 Ford Explorer. 96,000 trouble free miles...until now. There is a klunking noise and a slight whining noise when I turn left or right at all speeds, forward or reverse. If I take my foot off the gas, the Explorer will stop moving as if my foot is on the brake. No noise when I am going straight. There also seems to be a delayed shifting when I first stop at a red light.

Optional Information:
2003 Explorer XLT 4.0 L SOHC

Already Tried:
I've taken it to the local Ford dealer. They have changed the transmission fluid and serviced the steering. They have checked the front end and found no problems.

I would also like to know the answer as I have the exact same problem.

And its not a 4X4 with the 4 wheel drive engaged?

4x4 module replaced...still klunking.

So, I take my Explorer back into dealer. The service manager test drives it. He thinks that the front and rear tires are different circumpherence. I did replace just the fronts about 6 months ago.

The different tires are sending conflicting signals to the 4x4 module...when the tires turn the front and rear turn at different rates. The 4x4 module thinks that the rears are slipping and tries to engage the front wheels.

The dealer replaces all four tires and the 4x4 module for another $1,110.

I picked up my Explorer Saturday afternoon.

The klunking and metallic whine happened again this morning.

Back to the dealer on Monday morning.
