Fellow Explorers: I have a chance to buy a 1999 Mountaineer that appears to be in exceptional condition. 91000+- miles. If it has been properly maintained, what are my concerns? It has AWD, 5.0 engine and 4R70W trans. Are there any concerns with the ball joints or major driveline components? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks. David B.

Hello RojoBlanco!

Excellent condition body and interior are a plus. Low mileage is great! Maintained properly, the 5.0L/4R70W drivetrain is pretty much bulletproof. Borg Warner BW4404 AWD transfer case is reasonably reliable, keep the fluid changed yearly.
Most in this forum don't like the AWD because it is seen as inferior offroad.
My 99 Explorer Limited 5.0 AWD is a boulevardier and I love it! I have no need or desire to go offroad. I fear no rain or snow. AWD makes for an excellent daily driver. Except for the fuel mileage...

Ball joints, wheel hub/bearings/shocks/sway bar links/and brakes all wear pretty handily. However, none of them are awful to replace. Normal tune-up/maintenance items for the drivetrain are not bad, either.

My Explorer was a little distressed when I bought it. I took care of the above items myself. It did not cost me a fortune.

Anyway, others FAR more experienced than I will chime in.
I think you should go for it.

Good Luck!
