I have a 1994 ford explorer which leaks from the steering box seal. I got under the truck and tried to remove the pitman arm to replace the seal the puller is cranked very tight and I don't want to break anything. Can't get the pitman arm off the steering box. Do I have to remove both ends of the pitman arm or tie rods to get the arm off the steering box shaft.

They can be extremely tough.

On another vehicle I tightened the crap out of the puller. It was a very big 2 jaw puller. Wentto get a longer breaker bar and as I walked away from the Jeep. I heard an explosion. It finally let loose. Glad I wasn't near it.
Watch your body parts.

Yes, you definitely need to use a puller.
