Hi there, I was just informed by my mechanic that my right rear axel seal is leaking on my 2003 Explorer XLT and it has only 76,000 KLM.

My question is this, is it normla that the seal would be faulty at this milage or is it a defect in the vehicle. I did take out extended warranty on the vehicle when I purchased it this past may.

Please let me know what i should do.

Right Rear Axle Seal

Thank you my friend, i will bring it back to the Ottawa Ford Dealership and state my case.

As for the playing around, not a chance, all i have done with this puppy is drive it on street and highways.

I will ask them to check and change the other axle seal. You are totally right, it's better to have them both new.

Thanks
.

The seal is faulty as seals should last 10 years or more given all is OK with axle bearing and your not playing hard with the vehicle (4x4ing like a madman). This 1993 has never had one ever changed... knock on wood.

Now the other thing is if the bearing is worn the seal can also leak as fluid pressure can build up and push on the seal more from a worn bearing. The bearing if worn can cause metal fragments and of course this in turn will cut into the seal.

Either way take it to FORD or where ever the warranty place is and get them to fix it, a rule of thumb is.. if one is replaced... change the other as well.
