Lifter/Timing Chain Issue

Hey everyone. I have a 2001 Sport and was told by the garage that either the lifter went or it was the timing chain. I know that it's a job and a half to replace. How would I go about finding out how do this on my own? Any information would be very helpful. Thanks.....
