How does the control track perform when all four tires are in the air?

I’m looking at inspecting the driveline this weekend, and would like to rule out the half shafts requiring replacement. I have noticed from previous that when I had the truck up in the air that I had a grinding/clunking coming from the half shafts.

Is this normal? Is this the same as when inside the truck while on the ground and during searching for up front traction that the harshness occurs? What about play in the half shafts?

Thanks in advance!

my guess is that drivetrain lash [clunking] will be more prominent when the vehicle is in the air [no load on the drivetrain]. grinding is not good no matter what the senario. what kind of "harshness" occurs. when the front end starts to receive power [when on the ground driving] it kinda bangs in?

When the front wheel(s) look for traction, it has a grabing feel to it, almost clunking as it grabs for traction until it locks into place.

Also when the truck is in the air, it grabs at the half shaft. The grabbing is almost like two gears trying to catch but slip. Then they seem to lock into place???

Does this clarify?

Thanks for the reply!
