Hello, Can somebody tell me where this is located on a 2008 Explorer? My rear AC blows not-so-cool air while the front dash vents blow out very cold air. I have searched and read a lot of threads online and the consensus seems to be that the rear expansion valve could be the cause. I verified that my blend door works. Also is the expansion valve the same part for front and rear?

When you open the trunk it is inside the left side panel, where the switches for electric seats are.

I just got mine replaced and rear AC started blowing cold air right away.

I had issues in getting the expansion valve.
I'm from UAE and the ford dealer here wont sell expansion valve alone. They sell the valve along with the evaporator unit. The whole thing would cost about 200 dollars.

But I found a very similar expansion valve from the local spare parts shop for about 20 dollars. (Of GMC, but seems like both are made by the same manufacturer)

The work involves

- removing rear seat belt
- removing panels.
- removing AC gas.

I flushed and cleaned my rear AC system
Which took
- disconneting Coolant and Gas pipes from underneath rear left tire.
- taking out whole rear unit.
- flush pipes and evaporator unit.
- replace expansion vavle
- refit everything
- check for gas leaks
- refill AC gas.

I have taken pictures of the expansion valve and the whole replacement job.
I will post it sooner.

Hi Aslamvm!

Were you able to post the pix for your expansion valve replacement? And can i also have the part number for the one you got from GMC?

I'm thinking that I may have the same problem.
My 2008 explorer eddie bauer Rear ac is blowing hot/ambient air (front ac is perfect). Blend door seems to be out of the picture.
Pipes are both warm/ hot to touch in the back ( rear left tire part). And i can see a bit of a leakage going on as well. Ill post the pix of the pipes as reference.

Hope you can help out on this one.

Also living in Abu dhabi to be exact and we both know that month of June without AC here will kill ya!

Thanks bud!

Trying to replace my rear expansion valve and I got the bolt off of it but can’t get any tool in to unscrew the screw that’s holding it together. What do I use or how do I get it off? Any suggestions or what am I doing wrong?
