'04 FX4 Off Road Ranger
I've got an '04 ranger 4.0L XLT and want to be able to lock my rear diff. I dont know a whole lot about lockers or axle strengths so i could use some help. im running 33's and have a stock axle and dont really want to run the risk of breaking anything by getting too much traction. what would be a good way to go about doing this. i am a college student so im not loaded with money and would be looking for the most economical way.

Is your ranger a stock 4x4 ranger or the FX4? The fx4's have a lkocker in the rear diff already. If your open in the rear, buy an aussie locker...259.54 shipped to your door.

its an FX4. i didnt know it had a locker in the rear. im assuming that is only in 4WD low. i seem to remember only one rear spinning in low.

I beleive that they have a torsen limited slip. They are great ls units but not a locker. If it does then you can get out too cheap and get a lunchbox locker, instead you will need to get a full locker (one that replaces the entire carrier).

I'm not a torsen buff but i beleive if you apply some brake pressure they will transfre power to the slipping wheel. I thought that humvees had them too (different model of course).

yup, hummers had em before they brought in tt4 in thier trucks. They got rid of the torsens becuase you had to use BTM when you where wheelin and it confused newbs.

ONLY the FX4 LEVEL II has the Torsen. The standard FX4s have a standard 28-tooth spline 8.8. The Level IIs have 32-tooth spline axle shafts and the torsen limited slip.

The HumVees do have the same setup.... torque-biasing limited-slips ROCK!

For a standard 8.8, They make a Detroit TruTrac that is essentially the same design as the Torsen, and for a daily driver, it can't be beat!
