Generally, the newer, the better. The 2006 models are 4th generation vehicles, while the 2002-2005 models are all 3rd gen vehicles. The 02s and 03s had a LOT of problems (from what I've read and witnessed). The 04s and 05s seem pretty reliable. I don't know anything about the 06s, and they might be too new to have any sort of reliability data on them right now.
I've got a loaded 02 XLT. All of the options work fine, even after 5 years. No trouble with the moonroof gasket, 4x4 still works, etc.
The transmission is a weak point. Mine needed a $3100 rebuild with less than 65K on the odometer.
The extended warranty is your FRIEND. I NEVER buy extended warranties on ANYthing. Sure wish I had one now!
After reading alot of the posts in here about the '02 - '05 years I am getting more and more scared about having bought an '03 XLT. That being said I would say that you need to ask yourself what you are going to do with it. If you are wanting a 4X4 that you can lift or anything like that, then you don't want '02 to current due to IRS. You will have to pay bucks for someone to custom build lift for IRS. That is the only thing I am mad about is that no-one has made one yet.
