Hello all,
After being Explorerless for a few years ( thanks to the wife for totaling the last one ), I have inherited a 98 Sport 2wd with the 4.0 OHV. My dad bought it with 12k on it, drove it to 190k, gave it to my brother, and when my father passed earlier this month, I ended up with it ( there was a 05 colorado he owned as well, but who wants that ) Plus, who could pass up a free vehicle? And it will allow me to get rid of the Toyo Sienna Van ( toyota quality my arse, what a piece! )
Anywho, here is the skinny on the truck.
It currently has 207k miles on it, orig eng and transmission.
This past weekend, I changed/replaced the following:
Front bearings - inner/outer - I put these in at 100k and yeah, there was a little vibration/grinding/roar/voice of satan coming from them...spindle was clean though
Plugs and Wires - Still had factory installed plugs and wires - kinda felt like you were riding down a gravel road, but you were really in park with just the engine running.
PVC
Air/Oil filter and oil - started pouring synthetic in it, figured it couldn't hurt
Fuel filter - 1st time changing one of these...not too bad if you follow the advice on these forums
Front/Rear shocks - Greatly improved the ride and handling
Battery - Was a little aged and starting power was a little sluggish
Cleaned the AIC, but still get that nice fog horn/roar from time to time

Needs:
Drivers side door handle - has the floppy ear thing going on
Door lock/window motor/actuator - both sides. Locks dont unlock or sometimes dont lock, windows pulsate and loose on track
Brakes - front and rear were ok, but I know the front passenger rotor is warped - couldn't tell until the bearings were changed, but should have done them when I did the bearings...
Driver door speaker cuts on and off
Valve cover gaskets - leaking oil pretty well
transmission leaking at the front - who knows, I havent looked too well
Gonna try and slide in an 05 Supercrew CD/Radio in place of the factory cassette player...bet that baby won't plug right in, if it even fits
Front end bushings and ball joints all look pretty good, but they are factory so I will be changing them.

Now the engine purrs, the ride is great, no interior rattles or noises ( rear brake squeal from time to time, love those drums ), the interior is in great shape, no stains, rips, or issues at all. ( drivers seat has the permanent form of my dad, a little strange at times, but I don't see me changing that anytime soon )

I plan on keeping this puppy until I can no longer keep up with the repairs - should be a while.
Now, after this long introduction...I would like to ask for help from the more experienced Explorer owners. Other than doing a complete engine/tranny overhaul, what else do I need to check, do, change, repair, replace, etc...

Thanks in advance.

Change the rear axel fluid. Many people overlook that.
