Well first of all, what do you indend to use your 4x4 for?
If you are only going to the ski slopes and not offroading a lot, then the 95 would be OK. However if you are looking at gong offroading, then I would stay away from the 95-96 year models, as they have 4auto and no true 4Hi. This means that you are never sure when you are actually in 4wd when in hi gear. I personally don't like that trait, which is why I traded my 95 for a 97 model. The 97+ 4x4 models are 2wd auto, 4Hi and 4Lo. At least I know for sure that I am in 4wd when I go to 4Hi.
2002 and up have independant rear suspension, and are not, or not that I know of, liftable, so if you want bigger tires, you won't be able to go much bigger than stock.
91-94, is a much better platform for off-roading than the 95+ models IMHO, eventhough I do have a 97. There are alot more aftermarket goodies for the 91-94 models, then ther are for the 95+ models.
It would be good if you could tell us alittle bit more on how you intend to use your 4x4.
Hope this helps.
Oh! and Thank You for your service to our country.

First off thanks for the service, but I'd do a little poking around on here as to problems with our trucks. Trannys are the #1 issue from what I understand, depending on engine. As they got older they improved. Otherwise pretty solid trucks and look forward to your posts.

Middle east eh. doin' the deid by any change...USAF here also.

I had a 95 Limited it was my dads from 95 till 02 I bought it from him and ended up wreckin it a little ove a year later. Anyway the trans went out about 150 thousand miles 175 thousand transfer case took a poo, But the engine ran tuff till I rolled ending its life at 198 thousand. I am rebuilding the engine now to put in my 96 Limited and have completely disassembled it. My 95 engine it looked imaculate, could still see the crosshaching in the cylinders verry little wear on the crankshaft only the rocker arms and pushrod were worn out. A costly problem you will have is the air ride, if it hasn't had new shocks put on it. Look out that will cost you over $2500 at the dealership. Other than that, this vehical is why I bought a 96 Limited, well that and the fact I had a 95 Limited parts car. Good luck and get home safe.
