Hey guys, I have a 95 explorer 4.0 ohv and I'm "loosing" a quart of oil about every hundred miles. It has no oil leaks and it has all new gaskets from the top of the block up. There is no blue smoke coming out of exhaust either. I replaced the pcv valve hoping that was the problem but no luck. Has anyone ever experienced this problem? Thanks!

It has to be coming out the tail pipe if you have no oil in your air filter housing but really a quart every 100miles is excess by anyones standards

Yeah tell me about it lol, it's getting a reman engine from LKQ hopefully by the beginning of next year. We replaced the head gaskets in it about two months ago and the cylinder walls looked excellent for an engine with 214 on the odometer. I've only owned this explorer for about 3 months now and the oil consumption is my only concern. I wish I was lying about how much oil it goes through, but unfortunately I'm not. If it's coming out of the tailpipe I've never seen it nor has any of my friends that I've had follow me. Could the catalytic converter be the reason I'm not seeing any smoke out of the exhaust?

The car could be burning up most of it but you would still smell some sort of burnt oil smell. have you done a compression test on the cylinders yet?

We have not done a compression test on it, I need to buy a gauge, and I don't smell any burnt oil. The exhaust smells just like exhaust should smell. It doesn't have a misfire, idles perfect and runs smooth. I read somewhere on hear that these engines have a history of lower intake manifold bolts loosing up, anyone had any problems with that?

I have a problem with my 98 Mountineer can anyone help?

I don't experiencing that Jordan86. I'm just experiencing an oil leak.

My explorer has the tap tap tap lifter noise, would a collapsed lifter cause oil to seep in from the top end down into the combustion chamber?
