I own a '94 Explorer Sport 4x4. I have an intermittent electrical problem. When I turn the key to start the vehicle, all of the electrical systems activate as expected when the key hits the Run position, but as soon as I hit the Start position and the starter just barely begins to engage, I lose ALL electrical.

Often when this happens, I will turn the key off and then back to Run, the electrical remains disabled, and the starter will no longer engage.

In the past when this has happened, I would just keep trying to start it. Eventually after some sitting it would start, whether it sit for 5 minutes, or a day.

I just found out that I can disconnect the positive cable on the battery which seems to reset the electrical system and everything works fine again, but as soon as the starter begins to engage again, the problem may repeat. If I disconnect the positive battery cable enough times, eventually I can get it to start properly.

The first time this happened was well over a year ago, then everything worked fine for a long time, and it just started reocurring this week.

Today we had snowy roads so I was playing around a bit. I noticed that when I brake hard, the second the ABS kicks in, I seem to lose electrical momentarily. My radio resets, the dash lights turn off, and all the needles drop and then shoot back on. There also ~seems~ to be a brief engine stall or loss of power that easily recovers by itself.

I recently did an engine swap myself. The ignition problem occurred well before I even had a reason to do the swap. I never did notice a problem with the ABS cut-off before though. However, just in case it is important, I am currently running a '93 engine with no exhaust gas recirculation system, or camshaft position sensor using the original '94 computer which was setup to run both of those systems on the old '94 engine.

Any ideas?

well for the starting prob make sure all of the wires to and from the battery are clean and tight, you may want to get newe termanels*sp, and a post/termanel brush. good luck

It sounds like your battery cables need to be replaced. As they get old they corrode and don't conduct as well and will somtimes break. As far as your ABS that's interesting I'm not sure why that would be giving you a problem. Only thing I can think of is it's draws alot of amps and it's to much for the cables to handle, but I wouldn't think the ABS would need all that much power.

check your negative ground cables, these can also be corroded, and you need BOTH cables to be working properly to allow current to flow.

Guys, thanks a lot for the replies. Everyone sounds pretty consistent on what you think the problem may be. I'll give it a shot and see where I'm at afterwards.

Thanks to you guys and everyone that participates on these boards. Honestly, I am no longer a regular visitor to these forums, but the people here have helped me out a lot over the past few years and it's greatly appreciated.
