About 6 times now i have heard a loud bang come from what would seem to bethe rear end? it is not a constant noise or any kind of rotational noise and it happens once and then nothing for a while and then again and nothing? i am going to remove the cover this weekend to have a look but any help i could get to figure this out would be great.

thanks

how about a little more info? does it do it when you stop? when you hit the gas? when you turn? ect..

sorry about the lack of info, so far it has only been under acceleration such as going up a hill that is the only time i hear it, the whole truck shudders a bit when it happens to. I am going check the fluid level tomorrow and go from there i guess?

Is the truck the 5.0 with AWD?

No its just the 4.0 ohv but i thought they are all awd drive?

well... my 94 x did the same kind of thing and so did our 94 econoline conversion van. on the explorer i had a u joint that far overdue to be replaced. one of the cups were completly cracked and dry. that caused loud clunking noises shifing from park to rev or drive. check you u joints first. then on the econoline the rear end went out. it clunked nocked and just sounded relly bad. turns out the guy b4 us never put the ford rear end fluid additive into the rear end not sure if it was the cause but i put new carrier bearing in and now its great. just check your u joints first b4 a rear end tear down.

and be sure to get the ford rear end additive when you fill the rear end back up...very important!

The V6 models were available as RWD or with on demand 4WD.

The V8 models were available as RWD or with full time AWD.

I agree that looking at the u-joints before pulling the cover off makes sense.

Ok so all the U-joints look good and i had the rear end checked( both axle seal needed to replaced any way) by a good shop that only works on rear ends and they could not find anything? so now what? i am thinking maybe tranny?

If you are sure it's coming from the rear, check everything back there.... shocks, springs, ..etc

ha now im asking the same question as you. mines statring to do the clunkin again too. damn x. my 94 trans is acting funny... put it in park then the rev liiter works but if yu try to rev the engine the truck trys to move forward some while in park.

Any chance someone put a lunchbox locker in the rear axle? The symptoms you describe sound like what my locker does every now and then, a loud bang and lurch that sounds like an axle snapped.

stock x. both tires spin all the time going striaght or sideways. maybe a locker.
