Hello. I'm a newbie and not much of a mechanic. My explorer 05XLT started making a loud constant tick. It comes from inside the left panel of the cargo area. I pryed the panel out and all I see is a black box. What could the sound be?

Heather blend door actuator? from what i have read, that is located inside the Dashboard...

help, drives me crazy

There are a number of things mounted in there.

I hear a click from there when my auto headlights come on.

Im sure there are more things in there... hopefully someone else has ideas too.

do you have rear air? If you do there is a blend door back there too. Supposedly a lot easier to replace then the front. . .

here's the link that helped me:

When I did mine I found that there are two actuators in the rear left and they are not the same part number. The one closest to the rear was the bad one, but I replaced both because I didn't want to take it apart again. I don't know if they are easier to replace than the front, but you have more room to work with. I had to remove the rear door trim, the left 2nd row seat-belt, the left side plastic cover, and remove the screws that hold the rear a/c unit to the quarter panel. Then, you still have to remove and install the actuators "blind". I used a mirror to help align the shafts. Be careful with the one that's closest to the front, it has a shaft extension that can fall when you remove it.

Great article! We're going to have to change this actuator. We have the clicking sound and no heat in the back. The mechanic who looked at it said the rear blower motor is working fine which we knew. He flushed the heater core and still no luck. That was before we found this info on several threads in this forum. Thanks!
