Howdy,
has anybody out there Replaced the lower intake manifold gasket on a 91-94 4.0 explorer. I will be replacing mine this weekend because im leaking about a gallon and a half of antifreeze a week now.

Any tips, tools, or special hints would be appriciated.
Thanks

Ryan
Ps. Any of you on this sight live in Minnesota

Are you sure you want the lower intake manifold gasket? I don't think the coolant goes through the lower intake manifold therefore the only thing the gasket seals is the air and fuel. A blown cylinder head gasket can cause the symptoms you describe, but I don't think a bad lower intake manifold gasket will. A bad lower intake manifold gasket would cuase it to run rough, and either too lean or too rich. I'm not a mechanic though so if you aren't certain, I would at least look into it further.

Ryan,
Yes I had to replace mine on my 92 explorer sport. Be very careful when working with the injectors on the fuel rail. It is a really good idea to put new gasket kits on the injectors at the least and possibly have them flushed while out. I didnt do this and had to tear the damn thing apart again because I accidently tore an injector gasket. It took me about ten total hours of labor. Good luck. To answer the question of wether the lower gasket is necessary, the answer is yes. The gasket exposes one of the coolant ports causing it to corrode over time thus creating a wonderful collant gusher out the back of the engine block.

Hey guys, Thanks for the info. I did confirm with Ford Yesterday that is for Sure my lower intake. I will be careful of that fuel rail too

I appriciate all the info.

If you can afford it get the ford gasket. Its much better than the fiber aftermarkets, and installs with just a little RTV. Make sure you torque the bolts in the correct order and to specs - there is a sequence of torque steps to make sure it is torqued down evenly.

Have fun and good luck.
