Would having a LS rear be worse in slippery driving conditions compared to a non-LS due to the fact that a LS can fist tail more?
Is there such a thing as a LS front axle?

It makes me wonder why 4X4's are called 4X4 when there really 2X4 and 2X4 are really 1X4

If you know how to drive a vehicle with an LS in various conditions, an LS is always gonna be better than an open diff. And yes, you can have an LS front axle.

Both wheels on an axle do get power, until one loses traction with an open diff. Thus, most of the time a 2x4 is a 2x4 and a 4x4 is a 4x4.
