MAC Intake

Hi Everyone,

One of the first mods I need to do on my new '02 XLS is open up the intake. Does anyone have any experience with the MAC intake kit? I'm thinking of going with this, it looks pretty nice with chromed intake tube and conical filter and it can be had for quite a bit less then the K&N FIPK.

you would get more gains from the k&n.

the chrome mac intake gets hotter then the plastic k&n.

the mac looks better but thats about it.

K&N doesn't make a FIPK yet for the 4.0 sohc's in the 2002 Explorers (The 4.0 sohc Ranger kit is different!). I have been in contact with Dino at K&N, and he is going to use my XLS as one of their test mules in the next few months. Until then, your only options are Mac and SSD as far as I know!

BTW, the guys at SSD are very helpful, and their prices are DEFINITELY competitive!

That's very interesting because there are several online performance parts sites that claim to have a K&N FIPK available for the '02 Explorer 4.0 SOHC!!

That's why I posted that the Ranger version of the 4.0 SOHC isn't the same as the 2002 Explorer. If you look at pics of the setup tey offer you'll probably see that the intake pipe attaches to the intake at the front of the engine, not towards the firewall as it is on our 2002 Ex's. The SOHC's from 2001 and earlier used the front mounted intake, as do the 2002 Rangers. From what Dino Marutsis at K&N told me, they are still in the fitment stage. (I talked to him the first week of June '02)
Here's the link for a search of K&N products available for a 2002 Explorer off of K&N's website. You'll see they currently offer only air and oil filters for our Ex's, unless you have a Sporttrac.

www.truckperformance.com does have a K&N Air intake kit listed for the 2002 Explorer's (not sport trac's & ranger's). No pic yet. Was my understanding that K&N did not have anything available yet....as posted above.
