Hello forum,
I have been a proud owner of my 2000 explorer since 2016, and I have done ALOT of work making this car my daily, but the time has come.
I have had issues with lower oil pressure on idle which progressed to timing chain rattle. Which after ignoring for too long turned in a lower end thunk on idle. After 225,000 miles, I believe it's time for a rebuild.
I live in the Houston area and looking for a machine shop that will treat my engine with care and not a shop that will slam a drill hone through it because "it's just an exploder".
Currently I've been looking at a few machine shops like recon, Houston engine & balance, and thunderbolt (maybe), but one is a performance engine shop and the other two work in bulk which worries me a bit.
I was hoping some of y'all have tried a few shops and would like to hear your experiences! I was also considering smaller locations if recommended.
I am aware I can order a new remanufactured engine on kegs for about $3000 all said and done, but I'd like to have my block rebuilt for the sentimental value as the truck always ran so smooth and was strong the entire time I've owned it until the timing tensioner in the front started losing oil pressure and I developed a lower end thunk.
