i have read that if you put a bigger maf on you risk running lean especially at wot. i have a stock maf very restrictive so my question is what maf can i use with out hurting anything and still gain? and what about a tb any that will bolt right up that will give gain?

If you change your MAF from anything but stock it will lean out, if you want a bigger MAF you would have to get some performance chip to go with it.

You can get a larger aftermarket maf that has a sensor that is calibrated so that the engine will run richer to compensate for the increased air flow. They used to be available from summit racing and explorer express. BBK makes an aftermarket throttle body that bolts on.

Just did a quick search and you can use the maf sensor housing from a efi 5.0 mustang with your ex's original sensor. Just swap the housing not the sensor.

I run a 5.0 MAF housing with my stock electronics and haven't noticed any ill affects in almost a year of driving.

PCM compensates in closed loop

When the PCM is in closed loop the O2 sensors notify the PCM that the air/fuel ratio is lean and the PCM adjusts the fuel trim.

In open loop, such as WOT, the a/f ratio will be leaner than stock. The ignition advance will also be affected because the MAF sensor reports an incorrect air flow to the PCM so the computed engine load is wrong. The difference may not be noticeable unless you watch a wideband a/f meter and record the spark advance with a scanner. However, the performance difference should be measureable on a dyno or at the track.

i have another question about a maf upgrade befor i embark on this quest. i have seen people using the maf out of 3.8 windstars, 4.6 t birds and 5.0 mustangs. my question is which maf would be better and what years to look for? and was there and improve ments with mileage? thanks in advance

They are all the same size, 75mm I.D. I don't recall exact years. what I did was took my sotck MAF housing and compared the mounting points at the u-pull. I pulled mine off a mid-90's 3.8L Windstar.

I pulled a 75mm MAF out of a 4x4 4.0 Aerostar and put it on my b2.
