I recently read that Magnaflow mufflers have no chambers and the exhaust goes straight through the muffler through a sound baffle. I love the low mellow tone (loud enough but not too loud) if makes, but will this reduce backflow and torque? I tow in the summers, so I need the low- end power and torque. I don't notice much difference right now, but some day I'd like a bigger boat!

Also, i drilled my airbox but found out that I won't pass Calif smog if they see it. Anyone have an airbox for a '96 5.0 for sale? Thanks.

I installed magnaflow exhaust on my 96 4.0L, and it improved torque. Barely increased sound too. Most of the improvements in power are above 2000 rpms, but nothing was lost below 2000 rpms. The catalitic converters produce enough backpressure to keep the torque up.

I doubt they will see the cuts in the airbox. do they look at every piece under the hood?

I love my Magnaflow muffler. It helped with power and torque and did not take away any at low rpms. Good luck.

also...
i have an airbox from my 96 4.0, if it's the same, you can have it for a 6pack of beer.

Thanks BRacing- appreciate the offer. And the price sure is right. But unfortunately the airbox for the 4.0 won't fit the 5.0.

The auto wrecker said he found a used one somewhere in Tennesee for $175.00, so i'll probably have to take my chances having it smogged and hope they don't see the drill holes.

dude tell me they are not that serious about that stuff. come on most of the big companies that make high performance parts are in cal so how does a couple holes hurt you. oh and i would try a 4.0 just to see if it mite work and if it comes to you trying to put a new one on give me a call and i will see what i can do for you.

just buy a KKM.. theyre 50 state legal right?

im with jmt. why cant you inatall the kkm or a k&N set up?

California has much more stringent emissions laws than the rest of the US. I believe one other state back east follows similar rules (Massachusets or New York). For a vehicle with modifications to pass emissions checks in theses states the modifications must be CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified. It is a certification process that costs thousands of dollars to have California certify that the part does not affect the emissions in any way. If a part doesn't have a CARB certification sticker doesn't mean that it increases the emissions, only that it wasn't certified that it doesn't. Since it costs a lot of money to get a CARB certification, that price will be passed on to the consumer. California is so different from the rest of the US when it comes to emissions they get their own extended warranty on all emissions related parts (it's in your owner's manual). I have always heard that anything before the intake or after the catalytic converter has nothing to do with emissions; California doesn't believe the same thing though. No, the KKM is not legal for use in California since it has not been CARB certified. The K&N FIPK has been certified but will cost twice the price.
