I have done several mods to my 93 and it is still very slow. I want to know what I can do to make it faster. My goal is to do a burnout holding the break down. All it does now is just a peg-leg squeel. This is what I have done so far:http://www.cardomain.com/id/bnichols04 (cold air intake , dual exhaust....)

First maybe you should reconsider the intake under the hood just because of the things that could happen to it. Some options are a computer chip (commonly Superchip, Apten) and I have a superchip what I can say from experience is great. Several other options are a new throttle body, throttle body spacer and maybe even some headers to open up that exhaust more.

You could also install shift kits to help the sluggish nature, such as the B&M shift kits that installs directly in to the transmission pan, as well as the electronic shift kits which can be put in 3 modes to firm up the slugghish tranny.

maybe consider buying a different car. The explorer has a few main purposes.
1. Perform basic car functions
2. offroad and basic 4x4 uses
3. Carry large objects or tow items

if you wanna do burn outs perhaps you should buy a mustang :)

well maybe you should put it in 2 wheel drive and take it out of 4x4. when i got my 99 x 4.0 ohv i could do a burnout as long as i wanted like the second day. :burnout:

Man my 93 lights it up on demand. I have the...

Yea I would consider moving your air filter to under the hood... You will probably stall in a puddle in like 6 inches of water

My best theory.... if you want speed get a vehicle meant for it. I have a 1994 XL 2wd 5 speed, and yeah after all my tuning up (to stock specs) it has some kick... but I'm not expecting anything crazy out of it. I pin it to the floor and go through my gears and i'm only going 45...... Get a car that was designed to go fast... the explorers were meant for off road ability and their overall usefullness... cargo room, passengers, etc... have a good one

If the pavement is wet and you have an open diff, no problem, you should be able to do that already.

If the pavement is dry, then you really need a different vehicle. Or else you need to spend $$ on your Explorer giving it at least 200 hp at the engine, and better gearing, like 4.10's.

OK fine get an eaton M62 supercharger kit... put that on, bore it out, stroke it, get racing headers, racing exhaust and intake... then you will fly :-)
Don't forget the 4.11 gears with the positraction in the rear, and get some nitrous... hehe I'm a dreamer all right

line lock and bleach :burnout:

The fastest 4.0 I seen on the track was 7.9 sec for the 0-60. Im fast, but Im fast for a 4.0 explorer. Doing a good catback, chip, intake, and exhaust headers, that does the trick to give it a meaner feel. True tho, the 4.0 isnt meant to be a rocket.

gearing is probably the biggest improvment for the money

i would go with something along the lines of 4.10, 4.33 or at the highest 4.56 for your stock tire size... with a truetrac in the rear.

if you plan on lifting it and putting like 32's or 33's on i would go get the 4.56

if ya need more. Get your heads Ported/polish, and get a nice valve and cam job done. Then with a Chip you might be godly

Basicly, it's back to the same thing...get a different vehicle. Unless you've got the serious dollars to put into it, not gonna happen.

here is your best choice if your gonna spend any money on it get a 351 and slap that in there you will do burnouts for sure

I can get my 91 to do one pretty nice, though i can only get the right rear going. And of course you could always just do it in reverse. I'll post some pics of my rubber left on the ground tomorrow. And bleach will make it extra smokey if you get it going.

Here are some pics of the aftermath of one of my burnouts, and it was on totally dry pavement. It's main problem is that it's really tempramental at times.

Your intake is fine. The X is so high anyway. However you will suck up water if you ever try to cross some real deep water. I'd get one of those by-pass valves like AEM sells & stick that between the fliter & MAS. Do agree teh X is not biult for speed. However you can get good perforamnce from it with your mods, & a BBK tb, bigger MAS, & headers. BBK makes a nice set. If you really want to improve you off the line grunt, you need to swap in some better gears. Most X's are 3:27. 4:10's would be about right. It will also allow you to gain power back if you increase your tire size. I have eveything but headers, & my X is still so so slow.
