Question in regards to the type and brand of "better" manual hubs I can istall on my '94 Limited. Better since I don't think that best exists. Guy at Pep Boys told me for some reason that they don't have any for Explorer. They do have hubs for Ranger though. These should be the same, right? I'm confused.

If you already have manual hubs you should have no problem finding quality replacements. Warn makes a good set. And i think that Superwinch makes some too. If you have the automatic hubs you will have to go to the dealer to replace them. I don't know of any auto parts stores that have them in stock. But be warned, they are expensive! A new automatic hub will cost you around $375 and that is just for 1! Your best bet would be to convert to the manuals. You can get a conversion kit and the hubs for about the same price and they will last alot longer than the factory automatics. You can get the kit from Six States (www.sixstates.com) Good Luck! More to come!

Well, let me explain then. I do have automatics on right now but have heard that manuals are better. My auto hubs would go into hibernation for the time being. I'm looking to install manual hubs and was wondering if you guys have experiance with any particular type/brand. Help me here.

To my knowledge, the only hub available is the Warn. I paid about $225 for hubs, conversion kit, and installation. If you autos work fine right now, there's no reason to switch. I would wait until they wear out and start to make noises (you'll know!).

Hi Andre,
Bill is correct about Warn being the only Manufacture of hubs for the Explorer. There is a write up on converting Auto to manual hubs in the "Explorer Tips"(back on the main page) section that will tell you everything you need to do. Hope this helps. Dead Link Removed

It sure does help. I'll wait till I kill the auto ones first though. Thanks for all the good words.

Yup you gotta get Warn hubs but you will be happy that you did , i like mine alot. ive only heard good things about these manual one s and nothing but bad about the automatic ones. if you want to speed up the process of wearing out your hubs do like i did get in a big mud hole and go forward and backward and forward and backward turning your wheeling digging nice ruts for the wannabees! and ziiiing there goes my hubs and here come the wannabees they had to pull me out! lol it was funny. straight to the shop i go to get manual hubs about 200 bux later im completlry satisfied. good luck

Been there, done that. But I did not kill the hubs from rocking my truck back and forth. As soon as I noticed that I wouldn't get out this way I stopped rocking and started jacking-up everything. After an hour of digging in the mud (I always carry a shovel) and jacking-up every wheel and putting rocks, stones and wood under each I was able to get out on my own. The moral here is, don't ever try to hit the mud if you have stock suspension and stock highway tires. I learned the hard way. Ohhhh, my wife was laughing all the way home!! Ohhh, she was.

Um...you probably don't want to destroy your hubs while you are offroading. I got stuck and tried getting out, then SNAP!!!!!!! Well... crap there goes my hubs. Basically i was wicked stuck too. I ended up calling a tow-truck to get me out. It took 2 to get me out, though. The darn problem with fords crappy locking hubs, are that they disengage and re-engage everytime you change direction.

I got my warn manual hubs for 160+20 for the spindel kit. go to clemson4wd.com for their prices. you will diffinately be much happier with those.

I just converted my '93 to manual hubs on saturday, but i haven't had a chance to try them out yet. But i am going to Moab on Thursday so i will let you all know what happens.
The conversion was really simple and the instructions were easy to read. Anyone can do this conversion in sbout an hour. I got my manuals from Six States for about $200 including the conversion kit.
