I had my tranny replaced a short time ago. The guy appearently did not fill the transfer case and it has gone bad. I have a 91 model that came factory with a manual transfer case. Can I use a transfer case from one of the plentiful electronic style explorers? Or will a ranger one work? Any help would be appreciated. What is involved in swapping these out.

Can you find another manuel transfer case at a junk yard?i wish mine was manual transfer case:(

The two will interchange, but if you go to electric shift you will have towire in the shift motor and related componets, I would look around for a manual shift transfer case, I find them all over the place where I live.
Make sure you get a BW 1354 transfer case and not a BW 1350, the 1350 came in the early rangers /bronco2's.

If you wanted an electric t-case you would have to get the t-case, all the wiring, the 4x4 computer. and the switch and then hook it all up. It could be done but would be a real pita. your better off buying another manual t-case. I dunno about you but i'd be pretty pissed off if a shop forgot to refill my t-case after they did a transmission job, might want to see what you can get out of them.

I agree going from manual to electronic would be a PITA!

You would have a lot of wiring to do. I believe that the wiring for the push button would be behind the dash just need to get a switch. My manual vehicles had the plug behind the dash. But you would need the computer in the rear compartment wired in plus the harness going to the shift motor. Not to mention the auto hubs very spendy.

I swapped one of mine from push button to manual and I would never go back.

But after saying this I have 2 manual t-cases and 1 electric t-case. I never pulled the electric stuff out.

Thanks for all the responses, I guess I did not word my question correctly. I have found many electronic explorers in the junk yard but no manual transfer cases. Can you change something on the electronic to make it a manual? I do want to keep the manual transfer case. Thanks again!!!

ps- 88 vert are you still selling the white limited.

I will do a search for you around my area:D About a year ago I found two of them for 175 each:D She is officially for sale now:D

I really like yours, I have been looking at the white limiteds in my area. Yours is about a 10-12 hour drive from me. I found 1 with grey int. I may go look at this weekend. I was selling my 91 to a friend and the transfer case went out on the test drive. I have to fix that and see if he still wants it. I think i found a transfer case from a 95 ranger this morning. The guy at the yard is supposed to pull it for me this morning.

I Was just down in your area last year:D My girlfriend and I went camping down by Gatlinsberg:D

Gatlinburg is about an 1-1 1/2 hours from my house depending on traffic.

Are you in the Mountains? We stayed for 10 days and I loved it,we hiked about 75 miles in those 10 days:o

I live on the west side of knoxville in the valley. I have the cumberland plateau real close. It has many mountains on it and lots of trail riding. Check out windrockatv.com. Lots of trails for trucks and atv's. They have a trail for rockcrawlers (rattlerock.com) that is great to watch. No trail rides in the smokeys, Tellico (south of gatlinburg) is a great area also from what I hear, never been trail riding in it.

Just got done putting a used transfer case in and it works. On and off the road again! Thanks for all the help.

Congrats glad to see you got her up and working again:D

Ah great to hear that. Now how easy was that do replace?? Pretty easy huh?!!

Really was not that bad. Me and a friend on the garage floor in about for hours with breaks. The great thing about having a lifted explorer is I did not even have to jack it up.
