Mas Airflow Sensor question

If I unplug the connector to the MAF is the engine supposed to die? Or does it stay running? When I press the gas should the engine stall out if the connector is unplugged?

I don't know about your 1st Gen Explorer but on my 2nd Gen Sport the PCM detects when the MAF sensor is out of range and relies on the TPS for load determination and to adjust injector flow.

I would assume it works the same. I found the thread to test it. Didn't seem to work on mine I got no readings...
But maybe I found my problem. There is a hole the Alternator pulley wore into the bottom of the intake hose. I sealed it back up & will test later today.

That would be bad.. That would let un-metered air into the engine.. (air that the MAF didn't see).

The hole is letting unfiltered air go into the intake. How did you seal the hole (RTV silicone or tape)? You should try to get a replacement intake hose or make one yourself.

I used some RTV & wrapped it with Gorilla tape...It's no longer a problem.... X runs like it should now. Amazing that small hole could make it run so bad.

A plastic welder comes in handy for situations like this.

If the MAF is unplugged, the computer will see that in a matter of a second or two after starting. The check engine light will come on and the engine will continue to run. I did that once after removing the intake tube and was surprised the check engine light came on so quick. The engine will run but if you try to drive it, it will probably behave really poorly.

RTV should be ok to seal it but make sure it's flattened on the inside, you don't want a big gob sucked into the engine.
