I've searched, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I have a '96 XLT no climate control or anything really fancy. My A/C works great, but there is no change between A/C and MAX A/C anymore. What I mean by that is there used to be an obvious differance in fan speed and sound from one to the other. I really don't have any idea where to start looking for problems just with the MAX setting. If anyone could point me in the right direction or hook me up with a link if this has already been covered it would be greatly appreciated.

The primary change that you hear when you go to MAX A/C is the recirculation damper closing. This closes off the outside air and circulates the air inside the cabin.

There is a vacuum reservoir either in the engine compartment (early explorers) or in the cabin on the passenger side behind the right hand access panel at the feet. It is round with a couple vacuum hoses coming out of it. These are notorious for filling with water (condensation) and no longer working. Solution is to disconnect and shake it out.

There is a hose that comes off the vacuum manifold, goes to this reservoir then over to the MAX A/C switch. When put in MAX A/C, the recirc damper closes (whump) and the vacuum controlled heater line disable switch opens. There is a corresponding change in the sound and volume of air.

Check for vacuum loss, vacuum reservoir and operation of the recirc damper (behind glove box)

Thanks I'll start with that then, I suppose I'll check the switch.

there is a vaccum leak. need to check the two lines of the vacuum under the condensator

I've added the picture of the recirc damper on my 91, You may have the same set-up on yours. It's behind the glovebox (pinch sides and it drops down). The vertical piece on the right hand side strokes up and down as you move in and out of A/C MAX.

I checked the recirc door, and ofcourse it's not moving. It's getting no vaccume whatsoever when i switch it to MAX which it should. On another note I realized today that the fan ONLY works on high, which I'm assuming is the blower resistor. Could this be the cause of both problems? Also I found a broken vaccume line going to some sort of valve on the hose comming out of the heater core. I followed the line, but can't figure out where the rest of it is supposed to go. Any help is much appreciated.

I followed the lines under the hood, but everything seems to be attached just fine. Could it be the vaccume pump under the battery?

Ok figured out the broken line I found belonged to the selector valve which is part of the same vacume circut (for lack of a better term). I found the rest of the line tucked up under the firewall engine side. I hooked the two back together, and viola! My blend door and selector valve work again, but I still don't have anything but high on the fan speed. That'll be for another day like after payday.

Glad to hear that you got it partially fixed...........glad to also hear that it wasn't the blend door.

To me........it's always nice to hear, the up dates to problems.

Aloha, Mark
