Here's a write-up for my Mean Green Alternator installation. After reading the write up in Peterson's 4 Wheel Drive I was under the impression that I was going to have to modify the plug and the cradle to get this thing to work...no problems like that though. It was all plug and play. So here's the brief overview of how it all went down.

The old alternator:

1. Unhooked negative battery cable.

2. Move the air intake tube out of the way so that there is much more room to work with.

3. Take off the serpentine belt. This is accomplished by taking a 3/8 rachet and pulling the bottom part of the tensioner toward the center of the engine. It may take a long pipe or breaker bar to get the correct ammount of leverage.

4. Unbolt the old alternator using a 13mm socket and assorted extensions if needed. There should be 3 bolts total.

5. Unplug the two wiring harnesses from the old alternator and unbolt the power cable on the back of the alt using a 10mm socket. I found it easier to unhook the wiring after it was unbolted because my large hands had a difficult time navigating the small area around the alternator.

6. Hook the wiring to the new alternator.

7. Bolt the new alternator in.

8. Re-install the serpentine belt.

9. Re-install the air intake tube.

10. Hook up the battery and you should be good to go!

Here's the reading before the install while running 3 sets of off road lights and max AC:

And here's the final reading while running the same 3 sets of off road lights and the max AC:

I hope this helps someone out!

Nice writeup!
Can you tell me the specs of the new alternator?
Thanks,
Al

Thier website advertises up to 300% over stock. The seller of this item told me it was 200amps. I'm assuming that is at highway speeds. Double sealed bearings at each end. And that's about all I know!

Where did you purchase it from? About how much does it cost?

Thanks for the good write up!

Looks good. I may have to put one of those in my truck eventually. When I use lots of accessories at the same time (fogs, power windows, etc.) the drain is pretty high according the my batt gauge.

I was thinking of the Ford hi-capacity alt's out of a Limited but I'm game for the Mean Green if it's good.

I got mine off eBay... You can go to www.mean-green.com and buy them there. They are about $370 if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure that this one is stronger than the limited's alternator. I think that one is only 130amps.

Nice write-up

Did you have to upgrade the stock battery cables? I heard for anything above 130amps you need bigger wires or you risk a fire from the cable getting too hot.

Yeah, I think that's right. The Limiteds alternator is 130 amps.

If you run a winch or onboard air or something like that, that Mean Green looks like it could handle it too.
