Mercon multi purpose or XL-12 transfer case fluid

My 2004 takes Mercon multi purpose ATF transmission fluid for the transfer case. But I read somewhere thats been replaced by Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid XL-12.
I want to change the fluid but want to be sure.

IDK if Ford changed the spec, but for my 2000 the owners manual recommended Mercon ATF for the t-case. Good luck finding Mercon these days, but Dex/Merc is close enough for me. You could use Mercon V, but it's not necessary and more expensive.
