This mod is still a few months out for me, but I just wanted to see how it would look. Black powder coat on the factory 16"s and some bigger tires (hopefully 265/75/16's) What do you guys think?

Also, does anyone know who has powder coated these rims black before?

Looks great. I am going to paint mine black myself instead of powder coating (I like to be able to say "I did that", plus it's cheaper). I know plenty of people who have powder coated rims - not these exact ones, but other alloys. they come up really well, and powder coating is more durable than paint. it will still scratch, but it takes more to scratch than paint does.

You will need to get the existing paint removed first - bead blasting works well.

A little off topid, but whats the difference between bead blasting, and sand blasting? obviously the size of the projectile used for blasting, but is one better than the other?

Sand Blasting can use sand or other different materials. Bead blasting uses small glass beads. They both have minor advantages and disadvantages, but I would stick with sandblasting.

looks good

No difference at all really - sand blasting is a sub-set of bead blasting really.

I love it, I REALLY want to get mine black.

Looks awesome... possibly stolen off my truck though!!

Looks like a million bucks

Hey that looks great! Just what I was thinking of doing to my truck!..!

I don't know if he has done those rims, but talk to Jtsmith. He has his own powder coating oven.

you can powder ontop of powder the only thing one has to blast off is chrome. Ive always wondered why most shops want the blasting i powder over powder all the time best i can think it increases there $$$$$ since they reuse media and charge way more then there time to do it.

you may need to heat the rim up to say 200 but after that the heat plus magnetic charge should have it stick real nice.

Uh, not quite. You can powder over good powder. You can definitely powder over good chrome. And no, heating should not be needed on stripped or bare metal rims. Heat may be needed when coating over previously PC'd rims. Depends on your gun.

And yes, it looks nice that way. Been thinking of it myself - especially since I do powdercoating. I've been thinking of a gunmetal color - maybe a little metalflake or pearl in it.
