Explorer 1996
Hi there, im from mexico city (sorry about my bad english) ,i have a 1996 4x4 explorer, the transfr case and the tranny where replaced, and every thing works very good, the problem is when i engage the 4wd (high or low) the front wheels steel like a 2wd , every thing works great (driveshaft to front axle, the transfercase and tranny ) i guess the problem is the lock hubs or something like that.

I really need some help guys so if you suspec something just let me know, and if you got some pics or diagrams about the solution i´ll really apreciate it

are there any noises when you are driving? like popping? it could also look like you're still in 2wd but you may have what they call an "open diff." one tire will spin one direction while the other tire will spin in the opposite direction. if that is the case then there is nothing wrong with that. or if it doesnt engage at all then it could be a vacuum leak? im trying to rule out anything and everything if the driveshaft is still spinning.

The 1995-1996 front axles are vacuum disconnect axles. There is a round ball thing on the passenger side front by the bumper.. Check there for any disconnected or rotted hoses.

ok guys i checked everything, all hoses and plugs coming in and out of the " ball " thing, also i found these thing (i put a pic here )i dont know what it is, could be these thing the problem or what else could be?
if you got a diagram or some pictures that can show me where all these conectors go or what other failure could be ? the mechanics here can`t find whats wrong with my xplorer.

Guy i really apreciate your help .

There are 2 relays for the front central axle disconnect (C.A.D.) located behind the pass headlight, in front of the air filter. You will find the other end of those hard vac lines connected there. They might be bad.

You definitely need a new gasket on the axle housing. Try cleaning that up a bit. Remove the connector and spray some contact cleaner inside it. Might help, might not, worth a shot.

Do you have any flashing dash lights? 4x4 or O/D?

Is your ABS light on? Make sure the sensors are good.

What year is the replacement transfercase ?

thanks guys, in fact the axle´s gasket is ok i spayed contact cleaner on that thing , oops
ill check that 2 relays ,and 1 stupid question, how do i remove the the hole connector?

hi guys me again, i discovered that my explorer have a 98 gem instead of a 96 gem , that change could be the problem ? i checked everything else did somebody have the part number of the relays for the front central axle disconnect?

I gues the problem is that the damm GEM is not activating the clutch to engage the front axle could it be activated with a switch like the brown wire mod or something like that?

i really need the 4x4 to work and no body here in mexico city can fix it what else i cab do?

That might very well be your problem. The 98 4wd system is different than the 96 as far as the GEM is concerned. That 98 GEM isn't programmed to send the C.A.D. relay a signal when you switch into 4wd. You should find a 96 GEM before you go any further. The C.A.D. relay can be activated with a switch, there are several threads on how to do it here on the forum. Try searching for it, I don't know the thread off hand.

EDIT: Found it. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88718

Ok guys i followed the instructions to activate the C.A.D. with a switch and now i got 4x4 but i have a trouble , when i engage 4x4 hi i have a clung sound and i feel a knock also in 4x4 low especially when i turn too much in any direction what could be and how severe is the problem?

This sounds very similar to my prob, except I have a 99 & am in :australia , have put it at an angle with 1 back wheel in the air & in 4wd high (or low, it didn't matter) & the rear wheel in air just spun with no pull from the front. It has an electric rear diff lock & when I engage this via a dead-man switch it seems to partially engage the front, like it could also be a brown wire switch combined, or it might just be me imagining things.
It also, like this post says, has some noises when on full lock either way especially in reverse.
When I have the front jacked up & hold the front drive-shaft & one front wheel then get someone to spin the other it won't but when rocked backwards & forwards a couple of times it will after a clicking noise. if I don't hold the drive-shaft & one wheel then the other wheel will spin making a clicking noise also the other one won't move.
Any idea's peoples????????
& sorry for the hijack nanyiru
