Might buy a Yukon (keepin X still)

OK, I have the itch to spend some dough and now that the explorer is garaged waiting for me to get motivated to fix the tranny again, and proving to be less worthy of a daily driver as I beat the hell out of it on the trails, my 91 sentra just isn't cutting it. Heat or AC don't work, body is beat to hell, and generally chicks don't dig it.LOL

I am looking at an immaculate 95 GMC Yukon. Plans I have for this truck are to be a daily driver, tow the explorer to the trails as well as tow my boat to the river(something that happens about 4 times a week) This would also be a reliable rig to take on road trips and much safer than driving the X as my HWY rig.

It's got the 5.7, tranny cooler, hitch, only 65,000 miles and I can grab it for $13,000
4x4 shift on the floor
Black super clean and gray cloth super clean,
CD, cassette, power everything.

Anybody tow with something similar, have any comments, know of a good GM forum I can chat on. I will not mod this as it is too large to take on trails but the ride is pimp the way it sits already.

My parents have a 98 Yukon and it pulls there 25 foot Searay like its nothing,very comfortable too

A friend of mine had a '95 Yukon 4x4 that we would do some moderate off roading in and it did very well. Gas mileage was terrible (expected). The tranny eventually went out at 115,000 but he did not take excellent care of it. Great vehicle overall and a great trip vehicle.

On monday I test drove a 3/4 ton diesel suburban, talk about a freaking monster. Overall off road I wouldn't talk up a full size rig if I owned it. MY boss has a 98 z71 and it loses traction and has no flex whatsoever even on a sharp corner on a steep gravel hill. It is a joke to drive that because it takes like a 3 point turn and dang near lifts tires and spits out sand where my x can confidently make the turn and drive right up without slipping. Open diffs are open diffs though!!!

i had a black 2 dr. Tahoe, and loved it. you will like the torque of the 350 and the 4L60 tranny is great- its just a 700R4 with computer control. mine towed great, even with the 3:42 gears. got about 17-18 mpg on trips, 14 around town. i towed everything from a utility trailer with ATV's to a 21ft Mastercraft. it also towed my father's home-made 18ft lowboy with Massey-Furgeson on it. the trailer is made ENTIRELY out of oil field drill stem pipe, and has 2 mobile home axels. way overloaded, but it was a semi-emergency and it did the job. if you get it and ever have to do some work on it, hit me up. i did a few things on mine and other GM trucks, so maybe i can be of some help. i sold it not long after it got a 6" Superlift, 35's, and 4:56 gears. i realized that it was too nice to abuse off road, thus it was no use to me. here is a pic in its later stages...

very tight looking. Like I said this will not see too much off road but when I go on trail rides I bet it will see 4 low getting the X through some of these campgrounds and trailheads on the trailer. One other detail on the description sheet that I got when I ran the VIN at the dealer is that it has an oil cooler, is this an option or standard.

i think it was part of the towing package, cuz mine had the towing package and it also had a stock oil cooler.

OK JamesT I just gotta know for when I get new rubber (Which will be a while) I have heard you can crank the torsion bars on a chevy a lil more than a Ford cause the ball joints can hold up. Do you think i could in theory get a 1.5-2" in addition to an add a leaf or shackle if I ever wanted to "be just a lil different"

yea, you can get 2" easy. my dad had a 88 truck (same as Tahoe) and we did the TT with 2" blocks, because at that time, no one had a lift for the then new IFS. the last time i saw the truck was in 98 (10 years later) and it had never had work done to the frontend. and believe me, it was abused off road . rear will have to be add-a-leaf or blocks, you cant use shackle. GM runs their shackles upside down, and a longer one would actually lower it. blocks are cheaper/easier.

soon. This thing impresses everyone I see. It has definetly been in a garage it's whole life. I put a coat of zaino on it today and it looks great. Not one scratch or dent. Oh yeah pulled the running boards off as well. Everyone asks me if the explorer was traded in (Yah, over 20 g's in mods and purchases to trade it in for probably $4500) and I say, nah, tranny is gonna have some work done then you'll see it around again, Yukon is a street queen that will be towing the explorer to the trails.
