2001 Ford Explorer V6.. Has been a little rough at times at idle. Would run rough then die going into gear.. Only occasionally.. Now, it was shuttering bad going slow until gaining speed then just seemed to run ok but a little rough. Check engine light came on so pulled into autozone to check codes. Came back CYLINDER 1 MIS-FIRE.. Guy told me I need spark plug wires.. I didn't understand how he came to that conclusion so fast.. So, took it home and checked for spark out of each coil position.. Am not getting spark out of position 1 in the coil pack..

My question.. Do I have to replace all 6 coils, or the whole module or are the sold individually?

Just so you understand what I did..

Pulled wires off the coil 1 at a time.. Had strong spark from wire to coil on 2-6 but nothing on one.. pulled 1 and 2 off, put wire with plug to #2 on coil pack and got spark.. Took #2 wire and plug to #1 on coil no spark.. This led me to believe wires and plug ok...

The Code was P0301...

Just want to get some advice before I drop the dough on a coil pack.. Assuming I have to buy the whole thing it can't be cheap.

Would it be safe to say this is probably the problem?

That is how I interpret the results of your testing. If I was doing the testing, my next step would be to change the coil pack.

With the simple testing you did I'd say so. You might be able to get that part cheaper somewhere else, and I'd try to buy it from a store so you can return it right away if that doesn't solve it. Online parts buying creates more problems I'd say. Buy it local if you can find it for around the same price or cheaper

Thanks! Really appreciate the support anyways! Sometimes its good to just have a second head for me to be convinced in a direction.

Was looking for something else on this site last night and came across this, thought of you (oh, how sweet of me)...I'm not sure what your VIN is so I'm sending both links, make sure if you order it from here you get the right one.

I can't attest to the quality of their ignition products but I've bought headlights and window motors from this place before and never had a problem. Shipping is quick and free.

8th VIN Digit = E

8th VIN Digit = K

Thanks everyone for the help!!

Problem corrected.. In fact the pack must have been failing for awhile because overall it seems spunkier.. Anyways, yes.. It was the coil pack..

Fortunately for me my girlfriend works in the accounting department at a wholesale auto parts warehouse so I got the part new for 45 bucks!!

New problem and it worries me because I just replaced that coil pack..

Now it seems like my alternator is out... Battery not charging.. Put a voltmeter on terminals and its slowing draining while running after a full charge with battery charger. What would this have to do with the pack change?

Even stranger..

I took the battery out and had it checked and it was bad..

I have a ford f250 diesel and it has 2 batteries.. I'd assume they were both 12 v batteries..

Took one of these batteries out and put in explorer.. Starts fine.. Put meter on it and its slowly climbs in voltage.. Turned it off and disconnected at 19 volts.. Checked other battery still in f250 and it reads 22 volts.. What the hell.. I can't get anywhere troubleshooting the problem on my explorer..

I would suggest checking your meter. If the voltage was indeed 22V, the headlights in your F250 wouldn't last more than a few minutes.

Yeah.. Already did that.. And your right.. The meter was screwy..

Pretty sure my alternator is toast.. No change in voltage with car running.. Sucks.. Just odd that this happened right after I replaced the coil pack..
