So I have a 2000 sport and a 2001 Eddie Bauer 4.0Litre engine, and they both will "buck" while driving in snow. Its not constantly but as you are driving along you while get a misfire causing the truck to buck!!

Has anyone heard of this?
If so, any ideas of what this might be, MAF?

Please email me at Johnecbr954rr@rogers.com directly or post on here whatever works.
If you need more information just ask, im assuming since I have 2 ex's that do the same thing this is a common issue and probably an easy fix, this forum has helped out soooo many times with different "how to" do it.

Thanks in advance

John

I'm guessing that the engine is loaded when this happens?

In that case I would look at the plugs, wires and coil in that order first then go from there.

that would only make sense if if happened all the time!

its only when driving threw snow, and specifically when its fine snow, not large flakes. But thanks for the input

Still a good place to start.

I was figuring that if you were driving in deep snow the engine would load up increasing the cylinder compression which often causes misfire.

Happens in sand too.

Somebody recently suggested that a snowflake might hit the hotwire on the MAF causing all sorts of mixture problems but I don't know how it would get past the air filter.

not driving threw snow on the ground, roads today were wet but snow was blowing in the air.
hoping some other northern hemisphere explorer owner knows what im dealing with and knows the cause.

thxs for your support though

The air box distorts with age and let snow flakes in and they hit the MAF sensor. You may need to put duct tape on to seal it if its badly distorted...When you have the cover off, you can see this clearly, it you push on both sides of the lower air box is will go back to its proper shape, but it will not stay when you let go. A small length of 1/4 inch threaded rod through the lower air box would be a permanent fix.

A filter like this Motorcraft is needed as it has the larger lip to seal air box

thank you
this makes total sense.
I will replace the filter with a ford one
thanks again

^ A follow up with your results or fix would be greatly appreciated. Too many threads like this remain mysteries. TIA

Yeah, we'll have to wait for the next snow storm??,. but CBR can you let us know what happened?

Lots of snow today, did you get out in the truck?

well there was plenty of snow blowing around today to get the truck to misfire while driving.
I took the top of the air box off and as posted earlier the filter in the one corner wasn't sitting flat so I tape it up to keep everything nice and tight.

Result, was good, but not 100%. The truck still bucked a few times. But not nearly as much as it was earlier today before I sealed the filter to the lower half of the air box.

thanks for the advise, im sure this is where the problem is, and I took a good long drive today after the fix and am satisfied in the results.

Hell I paid $500 for a good shape 2001 EB with 224kms on it. and the 200 sport is a plow truck now. so im not too concerned

Good score then :D

Well, at least you know the problem, and its not serious. I was looking at fuel filters and wires before I figured this out. I wonder how may people sold their ex over the mystery bucking?

Also, you might try using that removable draft stop clear caulking to seal the air filter to the box. Is cheap and easy to remove.
