I am starting to do my own oil changes and my first one will occur at 100k miles. It's been discussed to not add Mobil One until the breakin period is over...and I think it might be done. :D

However, there is a point in the engine life where the gunk from dino oil is clogging any holes you may have in your gaskets and if I used the high detergent synthetic, I may clean out those clogged holes.

So, tell me....is it safe to switch to Mobile One at this stage or not? The car runs great now, I feel that synthetic may quiet down some of the roughness of this 100k engine. Thanks!

It is safe to change. You may want to consider using a engine flush when you do change the oil and filter. This will help remove most of the build up from the dino oil. Because the synthetic motor oil has a natural cleaning action because of it's chemical make up, you will avoid clogging your filter prematurely. If you choose not to do the engine flush, think about changing the filter a little more frequently for the first 5000 miles or so.

Engines who have the oil changed regularly, in my experience, simply do not have build up problems.

We just blew a motor ( Chevy 350 ) on our boat after 1500 hrs of operation and when we took it apart to find the problem, the innards looked like new. There was no residue anywhere. Granted, we change the oil every 50 hrs of operation and use a non-synthetic Havoline 30w oil.

I think you will love synthetic oil. Consider changing your tranny and rear end also.

Good luck....

I just changed the tranny with fresh ATF, but I am due to do both differentials and the transfer case. What do you guys recommend?

Also, do I need a filter with anti-drainback? My F-150 needs an anti drainback filter, but I don't think it matters on early Explorers.

I personally use Mobil 1 all around, but I think any synthetic would be fine.

Good luck.

Something to keep in mind with synthetics..

they are thinner than regular lubricants. What this means is, oil can get through an area that it wouldn't have gotten through originally. If you have any sepeage at all, I wouldn't switch...

Thats just it...not sure if I have any seepage. I know I don't now.

if your using petrolium oil now at 100k dont switch to synthetic cause your engine will start to use oil in the form of leaks and burning. if you have any leaks now then double the rate of the leak when you have the synthetic oil. the molecule of synthetic oil is much smaller than petrolium based oil. if you want to upgrade your oil use a synthetic blend and a fram double guard filter every other change. that is what i have been using since 50k when i purchased my X.

I switched to Mobil 10w30 in one of my company's work trucks at 125k miles amd the truck was fine ( not a hint of oil usage or leaks ) till she "died" at 350k miles.

Maybe I was just lucky? I don't know, but I do know, nothing enters any vehicle of mine now but synthetic lubricants.

We switched to Mobile 1 synthetic oil around 160k miles.. We now have 232xxx miles on the motor and it is still running strong and there is barely a leak.. (you can see it on the bottom of the motor, but it doesn't drip.. about 1 quart every 6k miles).. If only I could get the a4ld to last that long..

I developed several small leaks when I switched to synthetic oil. However, not a drop on the driveway; always burns off. Fair tradeoff by my standards.

Try a synthetic oil and if you develop serious leaks switch back to dino oil...
