What mods can you do to a Explorer? Do you do engine mods or what?

Depending on the mileage of your truck, you may want to go simple in the beginning (Intake - air filter, TB, MAS / Exhaust - cat converter, muffler & pipes, headers / Ignition - Wires, plug). Personally speaking, I have 140k on my truck and I am waiting for a rebuild to start working internally b/c I don't want to mix old and new parts together (you'll never realize full potential and when you have to rebuild later, you internal performance part(s) will be used as well). In addition, if you need to remove the engine to install the new engine mods, you may not want to forgo all the labor costs if a rebuild is soon in your future.

What are the specs for a stock Ford Explorer? I might consider buying one next month...

What kind of vehicle are you describing here? Although I’m sure your welcome to have anything in your signature area, generally members describe their Explorers here. And I can tell by the modifications you have made to your vehicle that that is not an Explorer.

I think that if you search this site, specifically in the Modified Explorers and the Under the Hood sections you’ll find a ton of information on modifications that have been made to Explorers.

He has an Acura Integra

hence, the name TEG.

Teg, it's obvious from your sig that you aren't afraid to modify. If you're interested in an Explorer, there are several modifications that you can make, some of which have been mentioned here. It depends on what you want to do with it. If you intend to tow, go with the V-8. It's torquey, modifiable, and won't do you wrong. There are 2 V-6 engines, the OHV and the SOHC. The OHV has a fair amount of parts available, but the SOHC is somewhat limited in the aftermarket. Did you check out the specs page that Ru Dawg pointed to? That should tell you what's up with the different model years as far as stock.

Regardless of year and engine, you can get a wide range of axle ratios, particularly from the aftermarket. Mine came stock with 4.10 gears, but you can get 4.56 gears from the aftermarket for 4wd models. The Ford 8.8" rear end allows even higher ratios if you choose to do so, but I don't see a need for those unless you are after larger tires for off road use.

Suspension wise, the earlier ones (91-94 years) lend themselves to lifting and have better articulation in the front end, due to the twin traction beam suspension. There are plenty of lift kits for the older ones, and a couple of options for the newer ones. Most of the people here have gone for lifting, but you'll find a sizeable group that preferred to lower theirs as well (see the "Sport Truck" forum).

If you are after on-road performance, go with the later model years. They have upper/lower control arm type front suspension, although the rear is still solid live axle. The 2002 4-door has some promise for on-road use, with the coming 4-wheel independent suspension.

I don't know if you would even think of autocrossing in an Explorer, but imagine the looks on people's faces if you did. It's always fun to surprise people. Plenty of the people here have surprised the Jeep crowd with their lifted Explorers. :)

ExplorerExpress list the stock time of the V-8 at over 10 seconds 0-60. And chopped off over 3 seconds with their supercharger install. This isn't correct is it. Mine doesn't feel like 10 seconds even with the 33's and no gear swap. The above link says 8.8 for the 5.0 which seems more reasonable. What's up with these #'s? How could EE get away with posting such erroneous (sp?) number comparisons?

Because companies like them advertise to (what they hope are) uneducated consumers.

Buyer beware!

The numbers look awfully similar to the OHV numbers that I have seen. I have never seen a magazine article that put the V8 Explorer at 10.7 0-60 and 18.1 1/4 mile. I also found anouther reference to the V8 Explorer and on it they say 0-60 in 9.8. Even that is high by about a second. To give you something to compare to, my co-worker's '98 4x4 V8 Explorer ran the 1/4 in 16.9 with 4.10 axle and 255 70R16 tires. That would equate to about a mid-upper 8 second 0-60. The supercharged numbers do look accurate for what I have seen though. I think they made an error in their numbers and weren't concerned about fixing them since it makes the supercharger look even better.

Tom Wilk yours came stock with 4:10's in it? thats no fair. mine came with stupid 3.08's. im bitter.
