My 1996 Explorer has a bad rattle , on start up when hot , but goes away in round 5 minutes.
A bit like a sticky lifter but i have a SOHC 4lit V6 120000km and the noise seems to be coming from the front of the motor.
It.s not the normal time chain noise , until the oil get there.
It sounds like a bloody diesel rattle.

Have you had the 00M12 service done to your explorer?

It's your cam chain tensioners that need to be replaced.

BTW, what is the production date of your explorer?

You said you have a '96. The SOHC engine wasn't available until the 1997 model year, at least here in the USA. Maybe Ford of Australia did it differently? Are you sure you have the SOHC and not the OHV?

Noise in motor

Yes it is the sohc 5 speed auto one of the first to Australia 10/96 and i have had the tensioners changed at 20000km and 70000km with the later being the new 99 model.
Its not a chain noise but a ticking rattle and if it was the tensioners it sould allso do it when cold on first start up.

Try a different oil filter, mine always rattled until I switched to Motorcraft oil filters.
