There are a few public trails in Western Maryland but they are pretty tame and packed down, not very muddy. The only option I know of is someones private land or farm that you may know of.

Yeah, there is green ridge, but as stated it is mostly rocky, although it does tend to get muddy around the creek sections. But nothing like what your looking for. How much mud are you looking for?

Over the fender kind of mud holes, or just splash through up to the axles kind of stuff :D

Just axles for now I dont have any sort of lift yet. I'm not against rocks I'd be happy to give them a try. It's just the small mud pit behind my friend's house and the field near his house are starting to get a little boring.

Nothing legal in the state of Maryland except the state parks in the west that offer ORV access and Ass. Island on the eastern shore.

You should go out to Green Ridge State forest. Its a good introduction for driving offroad and you wont have a problem with a stock Ex. Its a mix of small creek crossings, some packed trail, and some sections that are more rocky. Its an 18 mile loop. There are camping spots along it too, so you can make a day and night of it. You dont need any special permit either for a liscensed vehicle.

Here is some info.......

Green Ridge is a great park, you will love some of the views. One thing though, if you do camp, please be sure to take all your garbage with you. In recent years there have been some senseless people leaving trash all over. It's just a shame to be out in nature and have to deal with trashy camp sites. The park does a great job keeping things clean but they cannot do everything.

Oh be sure to check out the vista next to the park office, it is a spectacular view.

If you really want to be challanged go out there after a snow, the one section is very rocky and with snow it gets even better. I have had my ranger out there many times, it wasn't really a challange for it, but the kids really liked it.

Take a gazateer with you, although there is only one 18 mile loop there are many more scenic dirt roads in the area that are worth checking out.

Oh and keep in mind that this is a hunting area, in the next few days late season muzzloader will be opening and there will probably be some additional traffic.

But most of all enjoy the scenic views of the potomac river valley!!
