my 02 explorer just passed smog and was in great shape and running condition and all of the sudden turned off and when restarted it lost power and sounds like a Diesel engine? Noise is coming from intake cover on top of engine and not from pistons or timing chain? Can some one please help...

You didn't specify what engine you have.

Timing chains, maybe fuel injectors going bad. The sound like a tapping or click, with some loss of power.

Or simply a vacuum line

Do you also have a loss in power?

I was told it has a kill switch senor that closes in the intake valve to protect the engine has anyone heard of this and any idea of the name or number of to change it?

Timing chain jumped a tooth on startup. Sorry. Have you run it much since? Scan it and tell us the codes.

The codes should be in a P+4 digit format.
Example: P0345

That what I was given .. one was for distributor the other for intakecam

OK. So you have P0320 and P0340. Crank position sensor and cam position sensor. My guess is the PCM sees the two out of sync because it jumped time, but that is a guess based on the 4.0's tendency to do that and the information you have given on the noise and how it started.

I have rattle too, but I do not think it's a timing chain simply because IT COMES AND GOES day to day or start up to start up.

This would probably help: http://www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-stethoscope-69913.html

this is kind of what the chains do because they lack oil. once the oil warms up it moves through these channels easier and stops the rattle. those two codes mean the timing jumped or the sensor went bad or isnt reading thigns correctly.

hope its not for you. good luck!

It comes and goes between hot start ups too. I'm thinking it's the hydraulic lifters.

Pop a valve cover, then you can see if the cassettes are shot or if its a bad lifter. My money is on the cassettes being in little pieces and sitting in the bottom of the oil pan.

sounds like my problem

For mine at least, there was an electrical connector resting on a heat shield on the passenger side.

No clue why it was going away whenever I stepped on the clutch.
