my 2000 X doesnt have a screen in the mas?

i just bought a 2000 XLS 'OHV' and was changeing the air filter in it and noticed that it did not have the metal screen infront of the Mass air meter..... is this normal for this year? or did the previous owner probably toss it?

It was probably tossed. You don't need it.

Which engine? My '97 4.0L SOHC didn't come with a screen in the MAF.

I have an 01' came with 10 miles on it from the dealer...never had a screen.
