My 4.0 is knocking and has been for the last few weeks, its got 140K miles on it, the heads have about 8k.... but the engine's freggin pathetically weak

I've been REALLY debating the 5.0 swap, and whether I'd just be better off just replacing the 4.0 and doing a few mods....

its a 91 2WD EB that I paid $2500 for, and no it wasn't knocking when i bought it :) but is now :(

Should i just fix it, leave it stock and buy me a stang if i want speed...

What performance gains could i expect from a chip, exhaust, intake, and a few other mods on the 4.0?

i think if you want speed you should seriously look into another car, the explorer can have some speed, but overall its slow, i do believe the specs for it are 160hp (at flywheel) for a truk that has 4000lbs.
it can be given a bit of speed, but overall its still going to be slow.

if you want speed buy a 5.0 mustang,

later

If speed is what you need, go with the stang or some other sports car. Nothing you can do to the 4.0 will come close. The V8 with mods can come close. I wouldn't add mods to anything with 140,000 miles unless it was perfect mechanically. Seems like you have some decisions to make.

speaking from my 5.0... I dont think thta will save you.. my 5.0 has a hard time beating suburbans, excursions, expeditions, saturns, neons, hondas.. you name it.. If you get a 5.0.. I'd consider a nice one out of a stang or something.. cos the stock X 5.0 is SLLOOOOOWWW

With everything fixed, those bolt ons will give you some power and you'll feel a lot faster. Intake, exhaust, chip can actually take a second off your stock 1/4 mile time if done correctly. After that though, you need forced induction or nitrous oxide to really boost performance.

If you want more serious speed (15 sec and lower), pour $7000-$10k into your X or buy a 'stang.

exhaust taking a second off my time? what in the world kind of exhaust are you running? my exhaust didn't do anything but change the sound.

I said if tuned correctly, intake, exhaust, and chip can do that. On my truck is was very easy to start lowering my times. But after a while you run into a brick wall in terms of getting decent gains. Then I had to start spending a lot of cash to get my times lower.

He said with exhaust, intake and a chip that you would lower it down a second not just exhaust.

ah, all 3.. well I have a flowmaster 50, a kkm.. no chip cos I can't afford the high octane gas (or I dont want to afford it) and I'm SLOOW I'm talkin 14 seconds to 60 slow heh, but I'm workin on getting it fixed, had an exhaust, leak.. fixed that the other day, my vehicle overall needs a tune up it seems

i have a 91 sport with a 4.0. it was extremely slow and still is but after some gitter dun intake i noticed an incredible inprovment in bottom end, thought the top end is lacking signifigantly. any suggestions on getting that up to par with the now stronger bottom end?

What size gear do you have in the rear end?

im runnin stock setup on everything except inake

how do you find out what gears you have?

Check the axel code on the inside of the drivers door
